How to Find Low Competition Etsy Niches (With Real Numbers)

A low competition Etsy niche is one where the exact search phrase returns under roughly 2,000 active listings while independent signals confirm buyers are searching for it. Both halves matter: low supply alone often just means no demand, and demand alone usually means a crowd you cannot beat.

The supply benchmarks that matter

Etsy shows the result count for every search. Read it before anything else:

  • Under 500 listings: exceptional, act fast if demand is confirmed. Example from our July 4, 2026 scan: "meteor shower shirt" at 400 listings six weeks before the Perseid peak.
  • 500 to 2,000: a workable opening for a well-executed design. "National dog day" measured 1,383.
  • 2,000 to 20,000: possible with a sharp angle, slow without one. "Stargazing gift" at 1,708 and "astronomy lover" at 6,499 sit in this band.
  • Over 100,000: the phrase cannot be your discovery channel. "Teacher shirt": 614,141. "Dog mom shirt": 278,488.

The three-number scan (60 seconds per niche)

  1. Supply: exact-phrase search on Etsy, note the count against the benchmarks above.
  2. Direction: Google Trends, 3-month window, US. You want flat-or-rising. A falling line means you found last year's niche.
  3. Freshness: scan page one for listings with few reviews. Their presence proves Etsy is still letting new sellers onto page one for this phrase.

Where low competition niches hide

Event phrasings of big niches

Generic pet niches are saturated, but the event phrasing is not: 1,383 listings for a hashtag holiday that pet brands promote nationally every August 26. Events reset competition every year.

Role and subject intersections

When a base niche is closed, intersect it: not "teacher shirt" but "speech-language pathologist shirt". Not "dog mom" but "rescue dog mom". Each intersection typically cuts supply 50x to 500x while keeping the same buyer.

Rising phrases under stable seeds

Google Trends "rising" queries under a stable seed term surface phrasings the market has not stocked yet. This is tedious to do by hand across dozens of seeds, which is why our radar automates it and filters the junk.

The trap: low competition, no demand

Zero-supply phrases are usually zero-demand phrases. That is why the scan needs an independent demand signal: a real event on the calendar, a rising trends line, or search volume data. If none exists, the empty field is empty for a reason. Every niche in our weekly drops passes both halves of the gate before it ships.

FAQ

What is the ideal Etsy competition number?

For a new shop, under 2,000 exact-phrase listings with confirmed demand. Under 500 with an event behind it is the best setup that regularly occurs.

Is zero competition good?

Rarely. It usually signals zero demand. Validate with a second, independent signal before spending design time.

How often do low competition niches appear?

Constantly, because events, culture and seasons keep resetting the board. The scarcity is attention, not opportunity: someone has to scan hundreds of phrases weekly. That is the job PodRadar does on autopilot.
