Validating a POD niche takes five checks and about five minutes: supply, demand, direction, trademark and timing. A niche that passes all five deserves design time. A niche that fails any one of them will quietly eat listing fees and weeks of patience.
Check 1: Supply (60 seconds)
Search the exact phrase on Etsy and read the result count. Under 2,000 with confirmed demand is a real opening; under 500 is exceptional. For calibration, our July 4, 2026 scan measured "meteor shower shirt" at 400 listings and "teacher shirt" at 614,141. If the count is six figures, stop here and pivot to an intersection of the same niche.
Check 2: Demand (90 seconds)
Low supply means nothing if nobody searches. You need one independent demand signal:
- a real event on the calendar (the Perseids peak on national news every August),
- Etsy autocomplete finishing your seed phrase (buyers type it often enough to train it),
- search volume data with a named source, or
- social momentum (a hashtag measured in the hundreds of millions of views).
No signal at all means the empty field is empty for a reason.
Check 3: Direction (60 seconds)
Google Trends, 3-month window, US geography. Flat or rising passes. Falling fails, no matter how good the ratio looks today: you are seeing the exhaust of last season's niche. Breakout-labeled related queries are early-warning gold and worth their own scan.
Check 4: Trademark (60 seconds)
Search the phrase in the USPTO database and skip anything touching brands, teams, characters or artist names. In our system every candidate passes a green-yellow-red gate before design time; red is killed even when the numbers are beautiful, because one takedown can cost the shop. When in doubt, express the concept generically instead of quoting it.
Check 5: Timing (30 seconds)
For event niches: count backward from the event. US standard production plus shipping needs roughly 3 weeks, and the search ramp starts 4 to 8 weeks out. Inside 2 weeks of the event, the window is closed regardless of how open the field looks. The weekly drop publishes last-safe-order dates per event so this math is never done under adrenaline.
Scoring it
Five passes: build today. Four passes: build if the failure is timing (queue it for next season). Three or fewer: pivot. If you want the whole checklist run for you across hundreds of phrases every week, with each number carrying its source, that is exactly what PodRadar automates, and the methodology page shows how each check is computed.
FAQ
What kills most POD niches in validation?
Check 1. Most "niche ideas" circulating in videos and forums point at six-figure supply counts, because the people recommending them found them the same place everyone else did.
Can a niche pass validation and still fail?
Yes, execution still matters: design quality, listing photos and price all convert or waste the traffic the niche gives you. Validation removes the fights you cannot win; it does not win the fight for you.
How often should I re-validate a niche?
Supply counts drift weekly and events expire. Re-check before every new batch of designs in an existing niche, and treat any 5x supply jump as the crowd arriving.
